ok so i’ll be honest… i’ve always been that person who overpacks. like i’ll take 5 pairs of shoes “just in case” and end up wearing the same dusty sneakers the whole trip. but over time, after paying excess baggage fee at the airport once (literally hurt more than heartbreak), i kinda learnt a few hacks that actually save both space and money. some are smart, some are weird, but hey they work.
roll don’t fold (yes it actually works)
every packing video on instagram says this but i ignored it for years thinking “whatever, folding is fine.” big mistake. rolling clothes legit saves space and also keeps them less wrinkly. i once managed to fit 7 t-shirts, 3 jeans, and a hoodie into half a backpack just by rolling. felt like i’d unlocked a cheat code.
the underwear + sock stuffing trick
ok this one sounds gross but it’s genius. instead of packing socks and underwear separately, stuff them inside your shoes. 1) saves space, 2) keeps your shoes from losing shape, 3) socks don’t get lost somewhere at the bottom. just don’t forget to actually remove them before wearing the shoes (learnt the hard way in goa lol).
ditch the “just in case” pile
seriously, stop packing that extra fancy outfit “just in case i go to a party.” most times you won’t, and if you really do, buy a cheap shirt/dress there. it’ll even make for a cooler souvenir. i wasted so much space carrying blazers to places where i ended up in shorts all week.
ziplock bags are life
not just for liquids, but for organizing everything. chargers, toiletries, random snacks—throw them in ziplocks. makes airport security faster too. i even keep one for dirty laundry so my clean clothes don’t start smelling like socks.
travel-sized everything (or steal hotel minis)
why are we out here carrying 500ml shampoo bottles?? just get travel-sized ones or reuse the small hotel bottles. i literally refill the same tiny conditioner bottle for years. also solid toiletries (like shampoo bars) are lighter and don’t leak.
wear your bulkiest stuff on the flight
going somewhere cold? wear the jacket, boots, and maybe even two shirts on the plane. you’ll look like a stuffed burrito but it saves a ton of space. airlines can’t charge you for wearing your own clothes… yet.
packing cubes (gamechanger, not hype)
i thought packing cubes were another influencer scam until i actually tried. these things keep your bag neat, and you can just pull out the cube you need instead of digging through like a raccoon. also makes repacking way less painful.
cheap hack: rubber bands & clips
if you don’t wanna buy fancy organizers, just use rubber bands or binder clips to roll & secure your clothes. works almost the same way. i used binder clips to keep my headphones wire untangled once and honestly never went back.
bring a foldable bag
always carry one of those tiny foldable tote/backpacks. trust me, halfway through your trip you’ll end up buying stuff (souvenirs, random snacks, or that t-shirt you didn’t need but bought anyway). instead of stuffing it all in your suitcase, you can just whip out the foldable bag.
money saver: reusable water bottle
not exactly “packing” but super important. carry a reusable water bottle and refill at airports, stations, hotels. buying bottled water everywhere adds up, plus it’s wasteful. i once spent more on water in europe than on local buses, no joke.
hide some cash in random spots
not a space hack, but a money one. keep a few notes in your socks, inside a book, or in a hidden pocket of your backpack. saved me once when my wallet got pickpocketed in delhi metro.
scarf = multitool
pack one lightweight scarf/dupatta. it works as a blanket on flights, a cover-up at temples, a towel in emergencies, and even as a pillow if you roll it. basically, the swiss army knife of clothing.
shoes: max two pairs, don’t argue
this was hard for me but yeah… 1 pair of comfy sneakers + 1 pair of flip-flops/sandals. that’s it. unless you’re attending a wedding, leave the heels and fancy shoes at home.
small first-aid kit (but really small)
don’t carry a whole pharmacy. just a strip of headache tablets, a few band-aids, and maybe diarrhea meds (coz street food loves testing us). saves you from panic-buying overpriced meds at tourist spots.
the “laundry on the go” trick
instead of packing 15 shirts, pack 7 and wash midway. a tiny packet of detergent or even a soap bar works. i washed clothes in a hostel sink in manali and they dried overnight. weirdly satisfying too.
final messy thoughts
packing is one of those things you never really “master.” every trip i still forget something dumb (toothbrush, charger, once even underwear). but these little hacks at least stop me from paying excess baggage or dragging a suitcase bigger than me.
travel light = travel cheap + stress less. and honestly, it makes you feel a bit like those minimalist backpacker instagram people, except you’re actually saving money while they’re probably just posing.
